129 days until the Opening Ceremonies – Go Team Canada!!

by 2010vanfan

Well, the Canadian women’s hockey team took down the American team 3-1 in Victoria tonight.  It was the first of a six-game exhibition series between the two teams leading up to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.  Meghan Agosta got two goals, one in the first and one in the third, and Sarah Vaillancourt also got a goal in the third.  The American goal was scored by Erika Lawler.  Anyhow, good work team!!  Hope you had a very enjoyable evening!!

Other than that exciting bit of news, I mostly just worked today.  It’s still busy in the Olympic Superstore, and I’m really surprised at the things that we’re nearly sold out of, most notably the lovely warm Cowichan-style sweater that I’ve been talking about!  It’s very popular!  We have a waiting list!  I also came across a request today that I am still unsure about…  A customer asked about a sheep-skin, or shearling, trapper-style hat with Canada written on it.  Apparently they’re being advertised in some of the national-level papers as the hottest thing.  Now, I’m sure they would be if we had them, but I don’t know that they exist.  They were part of the Torino 2006 Team Canada Uniform, but apparently people have seen them advertised recently, and I can’t find any information on them.  Let me know by commenting, tweeting (@2010vanfan) or emailing me (2010vanfan@gmail.com) if you’ve seen an ad recently.  I’d love to see one and sort this out!  I think this is what they would look like:

Alright, I’m off for some shut-eye.  I’ve got work relatively early tomorrow, but I’m also hoping to squeeze in the Molson Canadian Hockey House update that is scheduled for tomorrow.  So hopefully, I’ll have a wonderful story to tell you tomorrow night about how exciting and fabulous it will all be!!  Cheers, santé!

130 days to go – Australian Winter Olympic team & Deidra Dionne

by 2010vanfan

So, when I tried to look up the Australian Winter Olympic team tonight, the first website that comes up is a site that let’s you know how much Olympic Athlete’s earn for medals that they win.  And that’s great!  But when I try to find the same information for Canadian Athletes, I’m stumped to come up with this information.  Maybe you all could help me out.

When I search Australia, I find out that in 2010, if you win an event that is pre-approved by the Australian Olympic Committee (a World Championship, a World Cup, or another international event at a comparable stand$20,000 for gold, $13,400 for silver, $10,000 for bronze and $6,700 for 4th place.  And coaches of these athletes win bonuses too!  $5,000 for gold, $3,350 for silver, $2,500 for bronze and $1,675 for 4th.  I truly believe this is wonderful!  The only question I have is “Do Canadians receive bonuses for their medals?”.  I had heard at one point that we were considering adopting this sort of program, but when I search, I can’t find any information on it.  Do you know the answer??  Please post a comment if you do!!  (Or email me at 2010vanfan@gmail.com).

There was also sad news today.  Deidra Dionne, bronze medallist in Salt Lake City 2002 aerials, had to retire this weekend.  She has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, and while treatable, makes it too dangerous for her to attempt to compete at Vancouver 2010.  Deidra, who already has battled back from a training injury in 2005 which involved a bone graft from her hip to her neck vertebrae.  While I support your decision whole-heartedly Deidra, I hope you know how much Canadians will miss your spirit, determination, courage and smile!  Your bravery in the face of adversity is something that we should all strive for!
